Our staff

The Shakespeare Hospice is governed by a Board of Trustees and employs approximately 60 members of staff throughout the organisation, including in clinical, retail, fundraising, marketing, HR, finance and administration.

With a shared dedication to providing exceptional care and support, our team works tirelessly to enhance the lives of those facing life-limiting illnesses.

Each member of staff employed by The Shakespeare Hospice helps to make it the compassionate, accessible, respectful and effective service that it is today.

Dr Paul Simmonds - Chairman

Paul joined The Shakespeare Hospice board in 2019 and became Chairman in 2021. Paul is a lecturer at Warwick Business School where he specialises in strategy and mergers and acquisitions. Before moving to WBS, Paul enjoyed a 30-year career in industry working in finance and mergers and acquisitions for several international public companies principally in the automotive, distribution and construction sectors. As a management consultant, he also worked with one of the UK’s largest housing associations.

Helen Cave

Helen joined The Shakespeare Hospice as a Trustee in August 2020 and is the Chair of the Income Strategy Committee. She is Executive Administrator of a major charitable trust which gives to performing arts projects across the UK. She is now on the opposite side of the fundraising fence, having spent most of her professional career raising funds rather than distributing them. She spent her early career with the charity Scope, starting as a Midlands Community Fundraiser before moving on to co-ordinating international trekking and cycling events.

Fiona Frizzell

Fiona became a Trustee with The Shakespeare Hospice in 2023. She qualified as a nurse in the late 80s and worked in a variety of settings within the NHS and the private sector. She held many roles before becoming a Matron of a private hospital before leaving to set up her own training and development business. During this time, she worked with further education settings to design and deliver the Registered manager’s course. She joined the regulator the Care Quality Commission in 2005 as a part-time inspector and rose through the organisation to become a deputy chief inspector in the hospital’s directorate.

Richard Goodall

Richard joined The Shakespeare Hospice as a Trustee in 2023. He is a retired Chartered Surveyor and Fellow of the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors). He has spent the past 40 years in private practice both in London and Birmingham. He has provided professional Commercial Property advice to several UK and Overseas Institutions, Pension Funds and Insurance Companies, UK Property companies and High Net Worth individuals on Property Portfolio Strategy, as well as acquisitions and disposals. He has also been a trustee of the Stratford Historic Buildings Trust Charity since 2016.

Nicola Gotrel

Nicola is a recently retired Physiotherapist who joined the board in December 2021. Nicola qualified as Physiotherapist from Birmingham University in 1994. She has spent 27 years working in the NHS, specialising in Neurology and Rehabilitation with Therapy team lead roles in Neurosciences and Acute Stroke, and a year as Inpatient Therapy Head of Service at UHCW NHS Trust. Her final five years were with SWFT as Physiotherapy Team Lead for the Community Hospitals in Stratford and Shipston-on-Stour.

Dr Richard Lambert

Richard joined as a trustee in June 2023. He trained at Birmingham University and after briefly considering a career in Paediatrics, he has been a General Practitioner in Alcester since 1998. As well as providing medical services Richard spent nearly two decades in medical leadership roles with Primary Care Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups with a particular interest in Clinical Governance and Prescribing.

Susan Newcombe

Susan joined The Shakespeare Hospice as a Trustee in 2021. She has board level experience as an Executive and Non-Executive Director in both the private and third sector.  She has worked in the third sector specialising in health care, initially for child and adult cancer charities and later in palliative care for hospices.  An experienced management consultant with a demonstrated history in the non-profit industry, Susan specialises in strategic planning to drive business and income growth.

Dr Jeremy Shearman

Dr Jeremy Shearman is a local physician, who joined The Shakespeare Hospice as a Trustee in 2018. Having qualified from Leeds medical school in 1988, he undertook his higher training in gastroenterology and hepatology in Oxford. He has been a consultant at Warwick Hospital since 2000, where he has fulfilled a number of senior non-clinical roles in both management and education. He also currently holds roles with the British Society of Gastroenterology and the Royal College of Physicians.

Elizabeth Spencer

Elizabeth became a Trustee of The Shakespeare Hospice in 2018. Elizabeth retired in December 2016, after 42 years in education, and 35 years as a Headteacher. From its inception, she was a member of the Worcestershire Primary Headteacher’s Representatives Group, subsequently becoming its first Chair. She is a Lay Representative on the Diocesan Board of Education, Chair of Governors of a Church School and a trustee of the Evesham Abbey Conservation Project.

Ross Taylor

Ross joined as a Trustee in August 2021.  He is Director for a division of the global IT Services company DXC Technology.  Since graduating in Physics at the University of Bristol, his entire career has been in information technology in the U.K. and overseas, starting in the health service in North Bristol.  He went on to work in the power and gas sector for E.ON before joining HP which later formed DXC.  Ross brings strategy and leadership experience across technology, customer experience, sales, business operations, HR and finance.

Anita Watson

Anita became a Trustee of the Shakespeare Hospice in 2023. Anita is the Commercial and Operations Director for a global insurance broker and has over 35 years experience in the general insurance industry, in both insurance company and broker sectors. Anita is a Fellow for the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII) and MBA qualified. She has experience in defining and embedding strategic propositions, effective acquisition integration, governance and regulatory control, offshoring  and implementation of IT strategy.

Sir Peter Rigby

Sir Peter Rigby has been the Honorary Patron for the Hospice since September 2017. 

He is the founder and Chairman of Rigby Group (RG) Plc which today consists of 100 companies in 6 principal business sectors - Information Technology, Aviation, Airports, Hotels, Commercial & Industrial Property Development, and Financial Services. The Group was founded in 1975 and is in the Top 10 largest privately-owned businesses in the UK with its prime technology company, SCC, being the largest independent IT company in Europe.

His charitable interests are channelled through the family charity The Rigby Foundation.

In 2021 he was the first British businessman to receive France’s highest award, the Legion d’Honneur.

He is recognised as one of the UK’s leading entrepreneurs and was knighted for his contribution to IT and business in the Midlands in 2002.
