“Nurses are there when the last breath is taken, and nurses are there when the first breath is taken. Although it is more enjoyable to celebrate the birth, it is just as important to comfort in death” – Christine Bell

As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul, and body of our patients their families and ourselves. They may not remember your name, but they will never forget the way you made them feel’ - Maya Angelou

Throughout my experience at The Shakespeare Hospice I had the opportunity to work alongside the Day Hospice team and Hospice at Home team. Both teams have been incredible and have welcomed me.

I have learned a lot about myself personally as well as professionally. I have developed a lot of interpersonal skills on this placement, which I would not have gained in the ward-based environment. It was dignifying being embraced into individuals’ homes approaching the end stages of their life, listening to beautiful stories of husbands and wives, mums and dads and sisters and brothers.

Working alongside the nurses, health care assistances, volunteers, occupational therapists, diversional therapists and complementary therapists it has enlightened me to gain a passion for palliative care.

I have understood that palliative care is not only for the loss of companions but exclusively to manage symptoms, diversional or complementary therapies, comforting and supporting, but mostly to celebrate life and the experiences that have become.

"Thank you to everyone for allowing me to flourish and teaching me for when I qualify."

Emilia Zoe Tognetti- Second year Student Adult Nurse at Coventry University

Mel Clifford, Day Hospice Team Leader said,

"Emilia has been a great student.  She has shown a caring and compassionate manner with patients, and become a valued member of our teams.   She has worked hard to make the most of every learning opportunity and hopefully has gained skills in palliative care that she can take forward into her future nursing career.

"We wish her all the very best in her future".
