Ambassador Abi wins a Lions prize

Tuesday 14 January 2020

On Saturday 11 January, Abi Hutchinson, a student volunteer at The Shakespeare Hospice, represented the Shakespeare Lions Club at the District Finals for Lions International Young Ambassador 2020 and she won! Abi’s presentation wowed the judges and she won a £500 bursary for the Stratford upon Avon based hospice. Abi then went on to The Young Ambassador Finals weekend 21-23 February in Dudley, where she won again(!) and secured a further bursary of £1,000!

The Lions Young Ambassador Competition recognises, encourages and supports young people (age 15-18) who are actively involved in helping others and Abi was up against some fierce competition, with three worthy candidates in the District Final.

Abi, a student at Stratford Girls Grammar School, presented to judges her vision for a project that focused on bereaved teenagers and a non-traditional support network to help tackle feelings of isolation and build friendships with others in the same situation. This is a subject close to her heart, as Abi has been through the loss of a parent in her teens, and she wants to dispel the stereotype of typical bereavement sessions and make them fun and engaging.

Abi not only volunteers in the Marketing and Fundraising Team every week, but she also volunteers for the junior young carer sessions held at the Hospice once a fortnight, in partnership with Warwickshire Young Carers. The competition judges said that Abi stood out as a great young person who is doing amazing work supporting isolated bereaved youngsters at The Shakespeare Hospice.

The Shakespeare Hospice Day Hospice is the largest stand-alone Day Hospice in the West Midlands. The Children's and Family Support Service helps to support on average 100 children each year aged between 4 to 18 years old. The Children’s Bereavement service had over 97 new referrals last year and provided 700 one to one sessions.

Abi said,

“I’m so grateful to the Hospice for giving me the support to run for the Lions competition.

I am so excited to begin my bereavement project and to support teens in a new and exciting way.”

Peter Humberston, President of the Shakespeare Lions said,

“All our selected Shakespeare Lions Young Ambassadors are very special young people each doing wonderful things in the community, but Abi is the first to reach the National Finals.”

Abi will now go on to compete at the Lions Europa Forum in Greece later in the year!
