Healthy Walks from the Hospice

Tuesday 27 August 2019

On Friday 23rd August, there was a launch of a new health walk event, taking place every second Friday from The Shakespeare Hospice (TSH)

With a planned 45 minute walk at a gentle pace, this new event will alternate with the existing Coffee Club meeting also running bi-weekly.

Initially aimed at existing Coffee Club attendees, this new initiative organised by Lib Dem Stratford Town and District Counsellor for Shottery, David Curtis and Stratford District Council (SDC) in association with The Shakespeare Hospice, will now be opened up to Hospice volunteers and the general public.

David Curtis has been involved with TSH for several years, lives nearby and has been planning to lead such an event for some time. Since being elected, he has been provided with the opportunity to do so. With one aim in mind, to make Stratford a healthier and better place to live David added “Walking is a simple and fantastic way of getting some exercise, getting out in the open and having some great conversations with some new people. This is something anyone can enjoy and we welcome all to participate”.

When asked why this event should start and end at TSH David said “The purpose is to give local people the chance to see where the Hospice is, meet some of the staff and maybe dispel some pre-conceptions about what the Hospice is like?

Before the walk commenced, Stratford District Council Active Communities Officer Danny Tolhurst explained “SDC is accredited to the ‘Ramblers Walking for Health scheme’ and this new event is intended to bring new social and mental health benefits to a broad spectrum of the community who may not otherwise get the opportunity to meet new people and spend time in a different environment.”

The next Health Walk event will take place at 10.00am on Friday September 6th  from TSH and will also be promoted at St. Andrews Church, Shottery and Trinity Court Surgery in Arden Street.
