Volunteers win Long Service trophies at WCAVA Awards

Thursday 20 June 2019

On Thursday 13 June, a group of loyal volunteers from The Shakespeare Hospice won Long Service Awards at the South Warwickshire Volunteer Awards Ceremony held at Myton School. Seven of the ten volunteers that had volunteered at the Hospice for a total twenty years attended the evening and picked up a trophy.

This inaugural awards event was held in partnership with Warwickshire County Council, Warwick District Council and Stratford-Upon-Avon District Council as part of events to celebrate Volunteer Week. A total 130 guests were invited to celebrate individual and group achievements of volunteers across South Warwickshire.

Not pictured were Jenny Franey, Marian Mitchell and Ileen Fisher who could not attend the Awards.

Jan Hyde, a hospitality volunteer at The Shakespeare Hospice’s Day Hospice was one of the ten volunteers that picked up an award on the night. She said,

"Over the years, I have met some wonderful people. Brave, funny, so interesting. We have had War Heroes, Sports Heroes. It’s all fascinating stuff and I feel privileged to be able to do it."

Beryl Dyke another one of the longest serving volunteers, added;

"The whole time I have been with the Hospice has been humbling yet rewarding and I feel and hope that it has made me a better person. We have had some great days out, theatre visits and coach trips to various places, with always a Christmas party!

“So many memories, so many friends - it has given me a completely new dimension to my life. I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to do this."

The Shakespeare Hospice is supported by approximately 350 volunteers who enable it to provide free care to patients and their families, despite the yearly costs of over £2m to provide this service and just 11% financial support from the NHS.

Carole Lomas, Voluntary Services Manager said;

“Volunteers help to form the backbone of the Hospice, enabling us to deliver the highest quality of care and support to our patients and their families.

"We are always looking for more volunteers, so we hope that this amazing group of Long Service Award volunteers will inspire others!

"We have many different roles reflecting volunteers’ individual skills, interests and availability. As Beryl says, it is a great way to make new friends!”
