Hattie's work experience Blog

Tuesday 28 May 2019

I am Hattie Mintz, a final year PhD student, researching in oncology clinical trials, with a previous Biomedical Science degree. I hoped by undertaking work experience at The Shakespeare Hospice I would learn more about the direct impact on a patient, with a more holistic approach than I have previously been used to.

"From the offset, the whole team at the Shakespeare hospice were extremely accommodating."

Whilst the experience came from a hands-on perspective, I was also hugely guided and learnt a lot from all the multi-disciplinary team who nurtured me and allowed me to shadow their tasks. I observed what a huge multi-disciplinary team is required to create not just a medical environment but a warm compassionate space; this included, nurses, therapists, drivers, chefs, physiotherapists, religious figures and occupational therapists (to name a few!)

I spent a lot of time talking to patients, and I learnt a huge amount about how it must feel to be a patient but often how remarkably positive these patients are. I also spent time in the lovely Diversional Therapy area with Di and chatted to some very competent artists! I observed treatments such as Reiki, Reflexology and mindfulness and the peace that this gave the patients.

I was lucky enough to attend Hospice at Home visits which again was invaluable and I was invited to attend MDT meetings, so as well as gaining insight from the patients’ perspective, I learnt a huge amount from the health care professionals’ angle.

I have learnt such a lot during my time at the hospice, thank you all very much for your time in helping me learn, the hospice couldn’t run without such dedicated people.
