The Shakespeare Hospice calls on the local community to “Heart my Hospice” during Hospice Care Week

This week The Shakespeare Hospice along with charitable hospices across the UK - is encouraging the public to support their local hospice in whatever way they can - whether by donating, volunteering or showing they care on social media - during Hospice Care Week which takes place from 8 – 14 October.

The Shakespeare Hospice would particularly like to encourage local people to volunteer, as a great way to meet new people, develop skills and have fun!

Just a couple of hours is all it takes to make a real difference in supporting those in the community who need it most. Volunteering is an excellent way to learn new skills within a variety of areas, including patient facing, administration, retail, fundraising and marketing, so ideal if a career change is on the horizon.  It is also flexible and can be fitted around other work or studies.

Located in Shottery, Stratford upon Avon, The Shakespeare Hospice is holding an open morning on Friday 12th October, between 10.00am – 12.00pm to answer any questions about volunteering.

There are also 8 shops across the region including 3 clothing shops in Wellesbourne, Henley in Arden and Alcester, a designer boutique in Stratford-upon-Avon, an award-winning bookshop & coffeeshop in Stratford-upon-Avon as well as 3 furniture stores in Stratford-upon-Avon, Moreton in Marsh and Kenilworth where people can pop in during the week, chat to the staff to find out more about retail volunteer opportunities.

The Shakespeare Hospice offers care and support to those living with life limiting illnesses and their families and carers in South Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds.

In 2017/18, The Shakespeare Hospice’s services will cost £2.3 million of which it receives an 11% contribution from the NHS. The Shakespeare Hospice depends on volunteers to fulfil its goal of providing free care to patients and their families.

Michael Synnott who volunteers in the Kenilworth Furniture Store, said:

“I was motivated to volunteer because I wanted to give something back to the hospice movement.  But since joining the team at The Shakespeare Hospice furniture shop in Kenilworth a number of other benefits have become obvious.  In particular, I interact with a wide range of friendly and interesting people.

Volunteering is a win-win: I am giving back but I am getting so much out of it as well!”
