Shakespeare Hospice Bookshop wins Specialist Retail Outlet of the Year at Hospice UK Awards.

The Shakespeare Hospice Bookshop in Stratford was awarded Specialist Retail Outlet of the Year in the recent Hospice UK Retail Awards held at Chesford Grange Hotel in Kenilworth on 1 May.

The Hospice Specialist Retail Outlet of the Year, celebrated the wide range of hospice retail specialisms and was one of four different awards being announced. It was judged by the chair of the Hospice UK Retail Steering Group, Trevor Johnson.  The Shakespeare Hospice was up against some stiff competition as there are a total of 2,500 different hospices nationwide.

The award was highlighting something which really made the retail outlet stand out and make a difference and the Shakespeare Hospice Bookshop demonstrated that a lot of consideration has gone into the shop, taking on board ongoing engagement with customers and its volunteer staff. A representative from Hospice UK said,

“We were also impressed by the dedication shown by the managers and the lengths they go to create a welcoming environment which encourages repeat business and much needed funds.”

As well as providing a vast selection of books covering a wide spectrum of subjects, the Bookshop has a Children’s Room and a Performing Arts Room offering a wide range of music and vinyl from across the decades.  In 2016, the Bookshop launched a coffee shop which opens daily, with its own loyalty card and has a reputation for its delicious selection of cakes.  Book clubs are also held monthly at the shop and there are Upcycling Events which are promoted via Facebook.

Tracy Holdback, Retail Manager at The Shakespeare Hospice, attended the Awards and was delighted to receive the trophy.

“We are over the moon to receive this trophy and it is fantastic that the Shakespeare Hospice Bookshop is recognised and all the hard work our volunteers put in to keep the shop running day to day.

We in fact have eight different shops across Warwickshire and the North Cotswolds which sell everything from books, music and fashion to home accessories and furniture as well as an ebay Store and we rely heavily on volunteers to keep them all running smoothly.”

The Awards were part of the Hospice UK Retail Conference, entitled ‘Spring Clean. Fresh ideas to drive your hospice retail forward’.  There was representation from many hospices and a chance to share with other colleagues some of the amazing work being done in the sector.
