Shakespeare Hospice Volunteer is inspired to create blog

Friday 09 February 2018

One of our wonderful volunteers, Ailsa Craddock, who is with us in Day Hospice on Mondays, has created a new cookery blog 'Alisa Cooks for One' which was inspired by her experiences of volunteering at the Hospice.

Alisa says: "The best moments are when people who have been so understandably sad start lifting their heads and talking again – and I see them exchanging telephone numbers to meet outside of the Hospice! But to do that they need to look after themselves – sometimes the first time they have actually had time to do so for a long time – and I want to give them back the joy of cooking and gaining strength with good food and then sharing with their friends."

Cooking has always been one of Ailsa's  passions.  She married her first husband when I was 19 and, as he had 4 children, she was thrown in at the deep end!  Since then she's had 3 of her own, and says: "Even working full time and not getting home till 6, I still put a 2 course dinner on the table – I think it was my way of de-stressing the gap between work and home.  I later had my own catering company for 5 years when I did dinner parties and small gatherings.  I was also cook for Anne Diamond when she lived in the next village and cooked at weekends for the MP John Maples (had to have MI5 clearance for that!)"
