Santa Run 2017

Wednesday 13 December 2017

A record number of Santas descended on Stratford upon Avon for this year’s Santa Fun Run, staged by The Shakespeare Hospice and sponsored by Listers Honda, Stratford.

The event was a fun-filled and frosty affair for the 300 runners who braved freezing temperatures for the 5K race.  As well as Santas there were a number of reindeer, elves and lots of dogs in Christmas coats!

It was touch and go whether the event took place, as temperatures early in the day were minus degrees.  However, as the morning progressed, the sun shone and ice melted, and the race organizers deemed the route safe to run, but urged caution.

The santas enjoyed a warm up by Ross Jarvis from Clubbercise next to the bandstand on the Rec, before leaving to run the course, which passed by the RSC, Holy Trinity Church and Lucy’s Mill, before returning to the Rec for a second lap.

Representatives from Everyone Active were on hand to distribute donated bottles of water to thirsty Santas. At the end of the race, there was mulled wine and mince pies to revive the runners and warm their supporters.

The run was won by Alex Adams, aged 12, junior member of Stratford Athletics Club, who sprinted around the course in super quick time, despite the conditions.

Annie Smith, Community Fundraiser at The Shakespeare Hospice said: “We are so grateful that so many runners turned up to take part in the race.  We thought the conditions might affect numbers, but more Santas than ever entered the event.  We’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to them for their support, and to all the volunteers who braved the cold and helped make it happen.”
