Volunteers' Week – Izzi’s Story

Thursday 04 June 2015

Volunteering for The Shakespeare Hospice

At the Hospice we welcome young volunteers who wish to develop new skills, give something back to their community or who are doing a Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Izzi volunteers on a Wednesday evening with the Young Carers’ Group:

“I volunteer at The Shakespeare Hospice with the Junior Young Carers’ Group. During these sessions, I volunteer with children aged 8-12, helping with various activities. Throughout the group we run activities such as painting, drawing, sports and Playstation games.

I decided that I wanted to volunteer with young carers because not only do I feel that it will benefit me in my future, but I feel that it is important to offer some support to these children. Being a volunteer at this group is rewarding, as many of the children tell the staff and volunteers how much fun they have had at the group.

I have learnt many things from volunteering at young carers. I have learnt how to deal with situations that may be difficult as well as learning new creative skills.”

Family Support

Our Family Support Services include Children and Family Support Service, Bereavement Support, Counselling, Chaplaincy and Social Work Service.

For the families we support, we can offer volunteers to stay at home with a patient while the carer attends the Hospice or other appointments.
